What are those peices of skin below your finger nails that split apart from your fingers and look stringy?

Usually when my hands are dry I get them, and have to pull them off, but sometimes they start to bleed and im worried they might get infected. I know they are not hangnails because I looked up hangnails and those are usually beside the nail. It is like a hangnail but below the nail.

thanks! What are those peices of skin below your finger nails that split apart from your fingers and look stringy?
actually, they are hangnails. you usually get these when your skin isn't hydrated enough. instead of pulling them, use nail clippers or nail scissors to cut them as close to the base as possible. pulling them breaks the skin which is both painful and allows for possible infections. when cutting, you may break the skin a small amount, but it shouldn't be anything to worry about. just wash your hands and keep the area clean, also use a hand cream instead of lotion to moisturize.
