If you are talking about the cuticle, it is layers of dead skin that surround the nail. The half-moon shaped ';white thing'; at the back of a fingernail is called the lunula. It lies underneath the nail in the nail bed and only appears white through the nail (it isn't actually white). It defines the free edge of the distal nail plate (the nail that grows outward)Where does the white things at the back of the finger nails come from?
