How can I get rid of dead skin around my finger nails?

The dead skin looks nasty and I can't pluck the dead skin out cause it always gets worst if I do. I'm a guy so no nail salons please. How can I get rid of dead skin around my finger nails?
My wife just did this yesterday.. First she soaked her fingers in warm soapy water for 5 minutes, then gently rub the nails with a towel. All the dead cuticles/skin came off. Easy and very cheap. How can I get rid of dead skin around my finger nails?
I hate to break it to you, but getting a manicure would be the best thing you can do for your problem. Guys get them all the time so there's no need to feel uncomfortable. All that happens is that you soak your fingers in some warm water for a few minutes and then the manicurist cuts all that dead skin around your nails. Then he or she files the edges so they won't break or snag later on. That's IT. No polish of any kind unless you request it.

You can attempt this yourself but since you're actually asking THIS question, it's obvious you don't know how to take care of your nails and won't know what you're doing if you try... which will probably lead to pain.
whats the fear of nail salons?? Seriously? tons of guys get manicures as they realize the alternative of looking grungy is worse! either way...use an oil...even whatever cooking oil is in the house and massage it around your nails. do it daily...then You can either buy a cuticle trimmer (drug stores, usually in nail polish dept) or try a nail clipper and trim the dead skin. Be careful...
This may hurt or not, if your skin's completely dead. if its sticking out, just cut it with scissors. i thought it would be REALLY painful, but it isnt at all, that is if your skins completely dead
Push down your cuticles, maybe apply a bit of lotion so the skin doesn't look so ';dead'; and dry, and then take some nail clippers and clip off any excess dead skin and hangnails. No nail salon necessary! :)
Cover them with Neosporn and band-aids. It worked for me.
