The answer is yes- it's for defense. Many white men grow out back hair as a defense, while hispanic men scratch people with their toe nails..
I am a white male, I work in West Memphis, Arkansas. I see this a lot and I find it very discusting. I asked a coworker why they do it. She replied ';I don't know';. Gross!
